Arsenal look set to complete a deal before the January transfer window closes on Monday after finally agreeing a deal with Ajax after being set a deadline by the Dutch side.

The Gunners sit top of the Premier League table but, after spending nearly €300 million on players in the summer, Mikel Arteta does not have the funds to significantly add to his squad this month.

Instead, Arsenal have been focused on outgoings, having loaned Ethan Nwaneri to Marseille, and another outgoing is set to be completed, with Oleksandr Zinchenko set to sign for Ajax.

Zinchenko has been on loan at Nottingham Forest this season but the 29-year-old has only made five league appearances and his deal was cut short in order to secure the move to Ajax.

Arsenal had been looking to cash in on Zinchenko with the Ukrainian’s contract set to expire in the summer but they had been reluctant to subsidise his wages in order to confirm the deal with Ajax.

However, with Ajax informing Arsenal that they would pull out of the move if it wasn’t resolved by Thursday, the Gunners accepted a proposal of €1.5m plus bonuses after agreeing to pay Zinchenko the remaining wages of his contract.

Zinchenko set for exit after Arsenal minutes decline

Zinchenko arrived at Arsenal in 2022 from Manchester City for a fee of €35m and initially proved to be an important figure of Arteta’s side at left-back.

However, Zinchenko’s role eventually diminished and he made just five Premier League starts last season, leading to Arsenal being willing to accept his departure last summer.

Only a deadline day loan to Forest materialised but Zinchenko had failed to break into the team since the arrival of Sean Dyche as manager in October and the Premier League side were happy to let his loan be terminated.

Zinchenko is now set to travel to Amsterdam for a medical to sign a contract until the end of the season, while returning to the Eredivisie where he had a loan stint with PSV in 2016.
