'Silent leader': Man Utd uncover hidden BARGAIN transfer
Manchester United have identified a new target to strengthen their squad ahead of the January transfer window as Ruben Amorim looks to build on his side’s latest bout of momentum.
United have only lost one of their last nine matches and are one point off the top four following their 4-1 win over Wolves on Monday.
However, Amorim’s men have kept just one clean sheet all season and only Liverpool have conceded more goals than them in the top half of the Premier League.
With United aiming to focus their resources on a big midfielder signing in 2026, the club have explored more cost-effective solutions to add quality to their squad.
Although reports in Spain have linked Sergio Ramos with a move to Old Trafford, United are looking towards more long-term options in the summer and TEAMTalk have named Elche defender David Affengruber as a potential target next year.
The 24-year-old has been a standout performer for Elche this season and, with his contract expiring in 2027, the La Liga side are hoping to command €30 million for their star man as United take aim.
Man Utd to push for bargain ‘silent leader’
Affengruber has been compared to United defender Matthijs de Ligt for his aerial strength, composure and ability to step into midfield, while Elche’s sporting director recently described the centre-back as ‘the silent leader of our defence’.
The Austrian is reportedly seen as a long a long-term partner for Leny Yoro in defence and United’s scouts are said to have watched him on multiple occasions to glowing reports.
However, Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla are among the clubs credited with an interest in Affengruber, giving United strong competition in any transfer battle.
A January move is described as ‘unlikely’ but Affengruber could be an attainable way for United to secure a defender with top flight experience at a bargain price as they look to find value in the transfer market.
