Anderson bid inevitable

It is a question of when, not if, Man Utd will make an approach for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson in 2026. The England star has surged up the club's shortlist in recent weeks.

Man Utd believe that Anderson is the ideal long-term replacement for Casemiro, who is facing an uncertain future as he will only be allowed to stay if he takes a sizeable pay reduction.

A bid for Anderson appears to be inevitable, with Man Utd feeling that he is 'tailor-made' to spearhead their midfield revolution next year.

Gallagher deal unlikely?

Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher is regarded as the most attainable of Man Utd's targets as far as the January transfer window is concerned, but it may not be that straightforward to land him.

Gallagher is not only determined to join a top club if he is to leave Atleti, but he also wants to play in Europe, which could prove problematic for the Red Devils as they are not in a UEFA competition this season.

It is also unclear how affordable the former Chelsea man will be because Atleti are still refusing to sanction a loan deal. He could therefore cost north of €40 million in January.

Wolves boss responds to Gomes interest

New Wolves head coach Rob Edwards has played down suggestions that star midfielder Joao Gomes could be on the way to Man Utd in January, following reports that 'advanced talks' took place over the weekend.

It has been suggested that Man Utd could seek to exploit Wolves' struggles this season by poaching Gomes in the winter. Other reports have claimed that Edwards has been promised by the club hierarchy that no important players will be sold mid-season.

Gomes has been on the Red Devils' radar for some time, with links first emerging soon after he joined Wolves in January 2023 as he immediately impressed at Molineux.

Another of Man Utd's midfield targets, Carlos Baleba, has also been in the news. According to former Mali star Cedric Kante, it is inevitable that the Brighton midfielder will join a big Premier League club before long.

“In my opinion, yes, Baleba will soon sign with a big English club," he said. "It seems a done deal. The only question is when: either this winter, even though he will be playing in the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon, or during the summer transfer window.”

Man Utd already attempted to sign Baleba in the summer and will likely make another attempt for him in 2026.

Forgotten Man Utd signing Diego Leon is expected to leave the club on loan in the January transfer window, as he has yet to make his senior debut despite impressing in training.

The 18-year-old joined the Red Devils in the summer after a deal was already agreed earlier in the year, but he has so far only featured for the U21s and been an unused substitute for the first team.

Despite this Leon made his senior Paraguay debut in October and, with the country qualifying for the World Cup, is looking to get regular minutes under his belt ahead of the tournament.

Another player looking to leave Man Utd on loan in January is midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who continues to be the subject of links with reigning Serie A champions Napoli.

However, Ruben Amorim has made it clear that he will not sanction any departures in the winter if he feels that this would be to the detriment of Man Utd's chances of achieving their objectives for the season.

"I know what it means for the World Cup, but Manchester United comes first, so if I can help the club and the players, I will be happy, if not I have to think about the team," he said.

Amorim also revealed that he has been pleasantly surprised by summer signing Senne Lammens, who has not yet put a foot wrong since joining the club.

"Of course, we do our diligence when we are going to buy players. It was a surprise. All the pressure that we suffer with the goalkeeper position, to arrive here and to show that confidence. To transmit that confidence to the team, I think, was a little bit of a surprise for me.

“I’m not going to say everyone, but I’m talking as a manager. I have no problem to say that was a surprise for me.”
