Amorim admits ‘surprise’ as Casemiro transfer demand issued at Man Utd
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has admitted that he has been ‘surprised’ by one of his summer signings, while the Portuguese has been told to find another Casemiro during the January transfer window.
United spent more than €200 million on attacking talent in the summer to attract Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to the club, but ahead of Monday’s Premier League clash with Everton, Amorim pinpointed Senne Lammens as the signing who has shocked him most.
The Belgian goalkeeper arrived in a €21 million deal from Royal Antwerp after Andre Onana’s struggles in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby, and the 23-year-old has repaid the faith of the manager by slotting in nicely.
Ruben Amorim on Senne Lammens
Amorim admits he didn’t expect Lammens to have quite the impact.
Speaking to Stadium Astro, he said: “Of course, we do our diligence when we are going to buy players.
“It was a surprise. All the pressure that we suffer with the goalkeeper position, to arrive here and to show that confidence. To transmit that confidence to the team, I think, was a little bit of a surprise for me.
“I’m not going to say everyone, but I’m talking as a manager. I have no problem to say that was a surprise for me.”
Amorim told to buy Casemiro support
Amorim, meanwhile, has been told to go out and buy a midfield alternative to Casemiro by Man Utd legend Bryan Robson.
Speaking to Sportsboom, the former Red Devils captain said: “People say he’s not this or he’s not that, his legs have gone. Not for me, Casemiro is still a fantastic player, and he would be on my team sheet every time. I think we’d benefit from another Casemiro-like midfielder, that would definitely help us.”
Manuel Ugarte has been used as Casemiro’s replacement in the early part of the season, but has failed to have the same impact as Man Utd’s veteran Brazilian midfield maestro, leading to these calls to find an alternative.
