Manchester United’s reasoning behind signing Benjamin Sesko has been revealed in an insightful report that details why Ruben Amorim’s men picked the Slovenia international ahead of Viktor Gyokeres.

Both United and Arsenal were heavily linked with summer moves for both players, with Sesko ultimately winding up at Old Trafford after the Manchester side agreed to pay a €76.5 million fee to RB Leipzig.

The 22-year-old has struggled to make an early impression under Amorim, with his only two goals arriving against Brentford and Sunderland.

Now facing weeks on the sidelines due to a knee injury, United are being questioned as to why they signed Sesko ahead of Gyokeres, who has netted on six occasions for the Gunners.

The Times has revealed exactly why the decision was made.

Three reasons why Manchester United signed Benjamin Sesko

Firstly, they believe that Sesko is a player who has the mentality to cope with the type of scrutiny he finds himself under. Playing for Man Utd brings a unique type of pressure, and it is the belief of the club’s hierarchy that the youngster has the fortitude to cope with criticism even after a relatively quiet star in front of goal.

The report reiterates that there are “no concerns” about the player’s performance. Indeed, United are even said to be “satisfied” from what they have seen because Sesko is matching the data that they had available on him before he signed.

Indeed, this information was a big part in why they picked the RB Leipzig hitman over Gyokeres: it shows that he runs off the ball more.

The Sesko deal was part of a drive to become a “fully data-driven club” that United believe will be the catalyst for the club to star winning trophies again.

The third reason that the player was snapped up is simple: he showed a clear desire to play for Man Utd.

These factors are said to have been critical in United’s decision to pick Sesko ahead of Gyokeres, though only time will tell whether they were right in making the gamble.

Just as Amorim has been given time to prove himself, it seems that the young No.9 will not be cast aside after a goal-shy start.
