Chelsea submit €70m offer for their next superstar winger
Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur have both submitted a €70 million offer for Athletic Club winger Nico Williams, according to reports in Spain.
The 23-year-old was heavily linked with a blockbuster transfer during the recent summer window, however he snubbed the chance to leave San Mames in favour of signing a new long-term contract with Ernesto Valverde’s side.
Williams’ contract at Athletic Club now runs until 2035, but he continues to be linked with an imminent exit amid interest from across Europe.
Barcelona were strongly interested in finalising a deal for the Spain international this summer, however reports suggest they are unlikely to pursue a transfer in 2026, paving the way for a potential Premier League switch.
Several English top flight clubs were interested in landing Williams this year, with Arsenal considered to be the frontrunners for his signature over the summer before opting to bring Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke to north London.
Ahead of 2026, it’s reported that Chelsea and Tottenham are leading the charge to acquire the Spaniard. In fact, Fichajes claim that both clubs have lodged a €70m bid for the 23-year-old.
Nico Williams to join Chelsea?
Chelsea have reportedly been working on a proposal for Williams for several weeks and they intend to finalise a deal for his signature quickly in order to fight off significant competition in the race to sign him.
However, Tottenham have matched their offer as they look to back Thomas Frank in the market.
Chelsea’s reported interest in Williams comes as a major shock following the club’s decision to sign both Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho over the summer to bolster Enzo Maresca’s options on the left flank.
The pair have impressed in flashes since arriving at Stamford Bridge, but Chelsea could reportedly add Williams to their roster in 2026, which may significantly impact their potential game time.
Williams, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €72.7m, has scored two goals and provided two assists in nine La Liga matches so far this season.
