Football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has dropped a major update on several key developments ahead of the January window, including the latest on Casemiro and Arne Slot.

Robert Lewandowski update

Robert Lewandowski has been heavily linked with a Barcelona exit next summer and Romano has revealed an update on his future in his latest YouTube video.

“On Robert Lewandowski, there is something to clarify about the future,” he said. “First of all, all the rumours you’ve seen about Italian, Turkish clubs and all the rest for the January transfer window - 100% forget about that. Lewandowski is not going to leave Barcelona in January. Impossible. 0%.

“Second point, those close to Lewandowski guarantee that the striker has not considered retiring. There were some rumours on Lewandowski retiring at the end of the season, but my information is that Lewandowski still wants to play football. This is his desire at this point of his career.

“Third point, what’s going to happen in the summer? My understanding remains that there are concrete possibilities to see Lewandowski leaving Barcelona as a free agent in the summer transfer window. But at the moment, I'm not aware of any official decision made.

“Lewandowski and Barcelona haven't communicated to each other any final decision. So let’s keep the doors open to any solution, but there is a concrete possibility to see Lewandowski leaving.”

Romano continued: “Also on Lewandowski, at the moment I'm not aware of anything advanced with Fenerbahce or with Italian clubs. There are several reports these days but I can guarantee Lewandowski has not decided anything at this stage. Fully focused on Barcelona. Fully focused also on his national team for the World Cup qualification.

“So Lewandowski is not thinking about his next club now. He will not decide in November. He will not decide in December. He will not decide in January. Forget about that.

Eric Garcia contract talks

While Lewandowski is unlikely to sign a new Barcelona contract, Eric Garcia is expected to pen fresh terms at Camp Nou, as per Romano.

“I wanted to add something regarding Eric Garcia because he is performing in a fantastic way,” the transfer expert revealed. “There are some reports on Paris Saint-Germain, but I've been telling you for weeks: keep an eye on the new contract for Garcia.

“I told you this in September and in October, and the conversations are ongoing, and are well underway between Barcelona and Garcia.

“Behind the scenes, Como almost had the deal agreed for Eric Garcia in the [2024] January transfer window. It was almost done - 90%. There was a flight booked for Garcia to travel to Italy and have his medical at Como in January on a permanent transfer.

“But Flick stopped the player, wanted Eric to stay, changed the story, and now Barcelona are advancing in talks to extend his contract. So one more crucial negotiation is ongoing for Barca’s future.

Man Utd want to keep Casemiro

Onto Manchester United and the Red Devils are expected to make a key decision on Casemiro’s future in the coming months.

“We move to Man Utd because there are many questions coming from United fans on the future of Casemiro. My understanding is that the situation of Casemiro is a really similar situation, in terms of strategy, to Harry Maguire,” Romano admitted.

"Casemiro and Maguire are out of contract in summer 2026 and for Man Utd, they are two really important players. Especially now Casemiro.

“If you think about Casemiro one year ago, or a bit more, there was a feeling like: ‘Okay, we have to find a solution, we have to part ways, the salary is too high, the player is not performing and he is not an important or crucial player for United.’

“But Casemiro has always been a legend of the game and he's been able to change the situation, to become a starter and a crucial player on and off the pitch. An absolute leader. A wonderful version of Casemiro.

“So now the desire is, from United obviously, to continue with Casemiro but on different conditions. The salary he has right now is a salary that Man Utd don't want to pay in the future. Not because of Casemiro or Maguire, but because they want to change the salary structure.

“So at the moment, for Casemiro, the only way to stay would be a different contract, a different salary. Otherwise he could be free next summer to go wherever he wants. He always had a lot of interest, especially from Saudi Arabia. So after his excellent performances recently, Casemiro obviously will have many clubs interested.

“At the moment that’s the situation with Casemiro. Nothing is guaranteed in terms of a new contract because of the salary, so either they find a solution on the salary structure together otherwise Casemiro could be leaving Man Utd in summer 2026.”

Arne Slot sack latest

Liverpool suffered a shock 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday and Arne Slot has been heavily linked with the sack in the aftermath of the game. However, Romano has clarified that a final decision won’t be made yet.

He said: “This season has been really poor for Liverpool so far. Terrible start. 11th is their position in the Premier League table and they have already lost six games.

“What happens with Arne Slot? Guys, at the moment I don't have any sort of information on Liverpool owners deciding to take a decision immediately. So Liverpool are not thinking about changing the manager now.

“The owners want to see different kinds of results and they expect much more from Slot and from this team. So, for sure Liverpool want to see something different from the manager and from the players because this is not only Slot. The players also have to take responsibility.

“It's complicated now but at the same time Slot can feel the backing and the support from the club.

“Liverpool are not in talks with any other manager or considering the possibility of firing the coach. That’s the situation as of today.”

Antoine Semenyo to Liverpool?

Finally, Romano has confirmed that Liverpool are interested in signing in-form Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo.

“On Liverpool, guys, I maintain my information on Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth. Liverpool have his name on their shortlist for sure and they are considering him for the January transfer window,” Romano revealed.

“Liverpool are well informed on the €60 million + €5m release clause and he remains a player they are tracking.

“What has to happen to see him moving to Liverpool? They need to decide internally what they want to do in January. After spending big money in the summer, they need to decide on the technical and financial point of view, but Liverpool are seriously considering Semenyo.

“They're not the only club because I told you last summer Semenyo was on the list of Man Utd, while Man City and Tottenham are also following the player.”
