Conor Gallagher STUNS Man Utd with January decision
Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher will only join a club playing in Europe in January, dealing a blow to Manchester United's hopes of reinforcing their engine room mid-season.
The Red Devils have made it a priority to revamp their midfield in 2026, and it has been posited that their rebuild could already start in January if the right opportunity presents itself.
Former Chelsea man Gallagher is viewed as just such an opportunity. Frustrated with his lack of minutes at Atletico Madrid, the 25-year-old is looking to return to the Premier League in a bid to secure a place on the plane to the 2026 World Cup.
Given that Man Utd explored a late move for him in the summer, links surrounding a potential January transfer have been quick to emerge. Out of all of the Red Devils' midfield targets, Gallagher is deemed the most attainable in the winter.
However, it is still unclear whether a move to Old Trafford is indeed possible. If the latest report from Sky Sports is anything to go by, it seems that Man Utd's chances of signing the England midfielder are slim.
Gallagher wants to play in Europe
That is because the outlet claims that Gallagher will only join a top club playing in Europe if he is to leave Atletico Madrid mid-season. Man Utd, of course, are currently not participating in any UEFA competition.
This also appears to rule out a return to former loan club Crystal Palace, who explored a summer move, as they are not traditionally considered a top club, although they are playing in the Conference League.
The report is confident that suitors will be 'queuing up' for Gallagher in January, but there is no guarantee that a deal will materialise. Atleti remain reluctant to sanction a loan exit, and signing him permanently will require a fee north of €40 million.
The only Premier League sides that haven't shown an interest in Gallagher in one form or another are Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City. Taking all of the above into account, it seems that Tottenham, rather than Man Utd, have the biggest chances to sign Gallagher in January.
