Manchester United have reportedly restarted negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion over a January transfer for Carlos Baleba.

The Cameroon international was close to completing a blockbuster move to Old Trafford this summer, but Ruben Amorim’s side were unable to finalise a transfer fee agreement with Brighton and the proposed deal collapsed.

However, the Red Devils have continued to track the 21-year-old’s progress over the past two months and they are now ready to agree a January deal.

That is according to transfer reporter IndyKaila, who first confirmed news of Man Utd’s interest in Baleba over the summer. He posted on X: “We have it on good authority that Man Utd & Brighton are once again negotiating for the transfer of Carlos Baleba.

“Manchester United owners are willing to spend £90m on the player. Green light given to submit official bid.”

Brighton demanded a fee in excess of €115 million (£100m) to sanction a sale this summer, but Baleba has endured a difficult start to the new season and Man Utd are hopeful of agreeing a deal for a slightly reduced figure in January.

Personal terms were verbally agreed between the Red Devils and Baleba in August, as per multiple reports, and it’s understood that he remains open to completing a move to the 13-time Premier League champions in 2026.

Man Utd chase new midfielder

In addition to Baleba, Man Utd have also been heavily linked with England duo Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson ahead of the January transfer window, with INEOS eager to bolster the midfield options available to Amorim.

The Red Devils failed to replace Christian Eriksen this summer, following his departure on a Bosman deal, and they are determined to land a suitable replacement for the ageing Casemiro.

Signing Baleba remains a priority for the club, although Anderson’s recent form at Nottingham Forest has seen him also emerge as a strong transfer target ahead of the January window.
