Conor Gallagher to Man Utd: Fabrizio Romano reveals the state of play
Fabrizio Romano has revealed the latest on Manchester United's interest in Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher.
The England international is looking to return to the Premier League in January in a bid to boost his chances of making Thomas Tuchel's final squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Since joining Atletico Madrid from Chelsea last year, Gallagher has failed to nail down a regular starting spot under Diego Simeone, which has led to understandable frustration.
Gallagher explored a move away late in the summer window, but talks with Man Utd yielded no results as Atleti refused to sanction a loan deal. Heading into January, the situation appears to look more favourable.
Journalist Ben Jacobs recently revealed that, out of all of Man Utd's midfield targets, Gallagher is the most feasible signing in January as he is pushing to leave Atleti, who are now understood to be more open to a loan exit.

However, speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has sought to pump the brakes on any potential excitement around a move to Old Trafford in the winter.
While he did reiterate that Man Utd are interested in the former Chelsea star, Romano insisted that Atleti have not yet made a firm decision on their January stance.
"There's no negotiation now," Romano said. "Gallagher remains one of the players monitored by Man United, as he was on the shortlist at the end of August. It will depend on what Atletico want to do, as they weren't open to a loan move in August."
Any potential loan move for Gallagher in January would likely include a permanent element. Atleti do not want to make a loss on the €42 million they paid for him last year, so he would not come cheap for the Red Devils.
