Man Utd flop Antony reveals he SNUBBED Europe's best club
Former Manchester United winger Antony has revealed that he turned down Bayern Munich before rejoining Real Betis in the summer.
The Brazil international has successfully managed to revive his career in Andalusia, initially moving to Real Betis on loan in January after going down as one of the most underwhelming signings in Premier League history at Man Utd.
Real Betis did not have a purchase option in their loan, so they had to negotiate with the Red Devils in the summer to prolong his stay. It was anything but an easy deal to agree as Man Utd insisted on a permanent transfer, while Betis had wanted to do another loan.
The saga dragged on right until the deadline, but Betis ultimately yielded and coughed up the €22 million required to sign Antony - a far cry from the €95m he commanded when he traded Ajax for Man Utd.
The 25-year-old has so far continued where he left off last season. In 11 appearances for Betis, he has netted a very impressive six goals and provided two assists.
Antony: I turned down Bayern Munich
Speaking to GeGlobo in his native Brazil, Antony has now revealed that he had the chance to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich in the summer.
The Bavarians, arguably Europe's most in-form club at the moment, made late contact with him while his move to Betis was still in the balance. However, Antony had already given his word to the Seville outfit and snubbed the German side.
"Dude, I'm going to be completely honest with you right now," Antony began. "It really shook me up. We're talking about a global giant, Bayern Munich, where a coach with that kind of history, [Vincent] Kompany, calls me.
"And we had a conversation there, he was super polite to me, said he always really liked my football, and this was at 11 pm, a little after 11. And, whether I wanted to or not, it really affected me.
"Because of the greatness of the club, the greatness of the coach, and the way he approached me, the way he talked to me. But what weighed heavily on my decision was also my family, man.
"It's about looking out for my children. Lorenzo loves this place [Seville], loves this city. When we were on vacation in Brazil, without knowing anything, he always asked: 'Dad, when are we going back to Spain?'
"Of course, this is a place where I'm very happy, where everyone who welcomed me has been so kind. The decision was also made by me because I'm doing well, I'm happy, and because I know what my daily life is like here.
"And also because everything was already settled with the club, because I had given my word. Everything was agreed upon verbally, I couldn't do this to myself or to the club. So the decision was very much a family one as well."
