Liverpool given January transfer boost as Crystal Palace confirm Guehi contract decision
Marc Guehi has informed Crystal Palace that he will not sign a new contract with the club and will leave next year, manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed.
Guehi is in the final year of his deal at Selhurst Park and is able to sign a pre-contract with foreign clubs in January, having seen a move to Liverpool collapse on transfer deadline day during the summer.
Palace had been hoping for a last-minute u-turn from the England international but Glasner revealed that Guehi has rejected the chance to stay and formally told the club of his plans to leave in the coming months.
"I think Marc has already told us that he doesn't sign a new contract, so he will leave next year," Glasner said on Friday.
"The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, 'no, I want to make something different'. And that's normal.
"And for us, it's how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that's all about how we are talking together."
Crystal Palace set to sell Guehi in January
Guehi’s decision will only intensify speculation linking him to Liverpool, with Arne Slot’s side still keen to make up for their failed summer move, however they are set for strong competition for his signature from a number of sides across Europe.
Liverpool will be in the market for a defender during the winter and they may be given an opportunity to sign Guehi again in January after The i Paper reported that Palace will look to cash in on their captain during the window following his decision.
However, it is claimed that interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona has tempted Guehi to consider a move abroad, while Palace insist they will not sell the 25-year-old on the cheap.
While the Eagles are keen to get some money for Guehi in order to sign a replacement, they are under no financial pressure to sell and the defender’s form could see them choose to keep hold of him for the rest of the season, leaving his future still uncertain.
