Bentancur signs new Spurs contract

Rodrigo Bentancur officially signed a new contract with Tottenham on Friday.

Romano told his YouTube channel: “The Uruguayan midfielder, who had interest from clubs in Italy and Spain, has decided to sign a new long-term contract with Tottenham Hotspur.

“The agreement is done - Bentancur stays at Spurs as part of their long-term project. The deal is signed and completed, and it’s a very important update for Tottenham.”

Frenkie de Jong’s future cleared up

Romano also confirmed reports from Spain that Frenkie de Jong’s long-running contract saga is ready to draw to an end.

He explained: “De Jong is set to sign a new contract with Barcelona. This ends all speculation about him leaving, possibly as a free agent in 2026.

“Despite all the past links with Manchester United and Erik ten Hag, De Jong has always wanted to stay at Barcelona. He loves the club, the city, and feels very comfortable there.

“Now, under new coach Hansi Flick, he’s considered a key player in Barca’s project.

“The verbal agreement for his new deal is done, it’s valid until June 2029. Both sides have approved it, and lawyers are finalising documents.

“It’s another important step for sporting director Deco, who’s been working hard to extend key contracts. In fact, Barcelona have renewed around nine or 10 players in the past year to maintain stability and control salaries under Financial Fair Play.”

What happens if Man Utd sack Amorim?

At Manchester United, meanwhile, there are no plans in place to sack Ruben Amorim should they lose to Sunderland on Saturday, Romano said, confirming David Ornstein’s information.

“At the moment, United have not prepared any contingency plan if they lose against Sunderland this weekend,” he explained.

“There’s no agreement with another coach, and no direct contact with Gareth Southgate, despite reports.

“Yes, Southgate has an excellent relationship with INEOS, but there are no advanced talks or agreements.

“For now, United’s focus remains on the games, supporting Ruben Amorim and trying to get results.

“If things don’t improve, of course, his position could come under pressure. But as of now, there’s no emergency plan in place.”

Xavi return announcement

Former Barcelona head coach Xavi was linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, but the Catalan will not be taking up that particular job.

“The winner of that race is Sergio Conceicao, who has reached an agreement with Al-Ittihad on a two-year contract. Final documents are being exchanged between the parties,” Romano explained. “He’ll coach stars like Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante, among others.

“As for Xavi, his focus remains on Europe. He would love to work in the Premier League one day and is studying the league closely, preparing for his next opportunity - whether that’s in England, Spain or Italy.

“Also, former Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro will become the new head coach of the Uzbekistan national team ahead of the World Cup qualifiers - an interesting move for him.”

Upamecano’s future

Bayern Munich centre-back Dayot Upamecano has been linked with several major clubs in recent weeks. Man Utd, Liverpool, Real Madrid and PSG have all been linked with the France international, who has struggled to agree terms with Los Blancos.

Romano has delivered the latest on the centre-back.

“Upamecano’s contract with Bayern Munich expires in summer 2026, and discussions over an extension are ongoing. The agreement was close around March or April, but some final details still need to be resolved,” he said.

“Bayern are pushing to extend. Vincent Kompany is a big fan and wants to keep him as part of the project. The club has already made a financial proposal and remains in contact with his agents.

“However, as time passes, other top clubs from England, Spain, and Italy are monitoring the situation. Bayern still have control, but if talks drag on, it could open opportunities for others.”
