Fernandez, 24, has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent months and Xabi Alonso’s side have identified him as a dream midfield target as they look to finally land replacements for departed club legends Toni Kroos and Luka Modric.

The Argentina international was on Los Blancos’ radar before his move to Chelsea in January 2023 and reports speculate they will attempt to secure his signature next year.

Fernandez has established himself as an integral member of Enzo Maresca’s preferred starting XI at Stamford Bridge over the past 12 months, but Spanish outlet Defensa Central claim that Chelsea are open to sanctioning a sale to Real Madrid if Valverde is included in the deal.

The Uruguay international has racked up 331 appearances for the Spanish giants since his arrival in 2016, however he is reportedly on Chelsea’s transfer wishlist and the west London outfit are weighing up a possible transfer next year.

Defensa Central state that Fernandez would be “delighted” to join Real Madrid, while Chelsea are said to have “agreed” to a swap deal.

Despite this, Real Madrid currently have no intention of allowing Valverde to depart and this could prove problematic in regards to a deal being completed in 2026.

Federico Valverde statement

Speculation that Valverde could be set to join Chelsea in 2026 comes after he posted an official statement on social media in response to criticism over his form so far this season.

The Uruguay international had been accused of refusing to play against Kairat Almaty in the Champions League on Tuesday evening and he took to X to deny such rumours.

“I have read several articles damaging my reputation. I know I’ve had bad games, I’m aware of it. I’m not hiding, and I face the criticism head-on. I’m truly sad. People can say many things about me, but under no circumstances can they say that I refuse to play,” Valverde wrote.

“I have given everything and more for this club, I’ve played while fractured, injured, and I’ve never complained or asked for a break.

“I have a good relationship with the coach, which makes me feel confident enough to tell him which position I prefer on the pitch, but I always, always made it clear that I’m available to perform anywhere, on any trip, and in every game.

“I’ve left my heart and soul in this club and I will continue to do so, even if sometimes it’s not enough or I’m not playing as I’d like. I swear on my pride that I will never give up and will fight until the end, playing wherever I’m needed.”
