Morgan Rogers talks officially start as Chelsea eye €100m signing
Aston Villa have officially opened contract talks with Morgan Rogers to fend off interest from Chelsea.
The England international is slowly getting back to his best after a dismal start to the season. Rogers was the subject of plenty of speculation over the summer, and it may have affected his performances.
The Aston Villa star enjoyed a spectacular 2024/25 season, notching 14 goals and 16 assists across all competitions. Naturally, this attracted the attention of suitors, with Chelsea registering their interest in the 23-year-old.
Rogers is a close friend of Cole Palmer, even coming up with his 'cold' celebration, so a link to Chelsea was easy to establish. Reports have since suggested that the Blues will return for the attacking midfielder in 2026.
However, Aston Villa are looking to ensure that they keep Rogers beyond this season by handing him a new contract. According to Sky Sports and Fabrizio Romano, discussions are now officially in full swing.
Villa to hand key trio new contracts
Rogers is one of three key players Villa are trying to tie down to new deals, alongside captain John McGinn and starting right-back Matty Cash. While McGinn and Cash are on the verge of penning new deals, talks with Rogers are still at an early stage.
However, these discussions have been described as 'positive,' which is a big boon for Villa and their new recruitment chief Roberto Olabe. Rogers only signed a new contract last year - less than 12 months after joining - but Villa want to reward him again for his brilliant development.
His current deal runs until 2030, and Villa are now proposing an extension until 2031. Romano states that Villa 'rejected several approaches' for Rogers in the summer, while Sky notes that he has a 'growing list of admirers.'
A new deal could signal the end of Chelsea's pursuit of the player for the foreseeable future, although given Villa's problems with financial regulations in recent seasons, they may still be compelled to cash in on him if a suitable offer arrives in 2026.
