Chelsea and Manchester United are set to bid for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton in January, according to a report.

The England international has established himself as one of the Premier League's most exciting midfielders since joining Crystal Palace in January 2024.

Although Wharton has repeatedly struggled with niggling injuries, the 21-year-old is nothing short of sensational when fully fit and at the top of his game.

Naturally, this fact gives rise to constant speculation about his future, with Real Madrid and Man Utd among the clubs most persistently associated with the Palace youngster.

Both clubs refrained from signing a new midfielder this summer, despite it being a position that could be improved upon, particularly as far as Man Utd are concerned. The Red Devils failed with an approach for Carlos Baleba this summer, and are expected to return for him in 2026.

Chelsea, Man Utd ready Wharton bids

However, Man Utd know that the 21-year-old will be incredibly expensive next year, so they are also looking at potential alternatives. One such alternative is Chelsea midfielder Romeo Lavia, the other is Wharton.

According to TEAMtalk, Man Utd remain firmly in the race for Wharton despite their preference for Baleba. Chelsea, too, are said to be keen on the Three Lions wonderkid.

In fact, the report goes so far as to suggest that both clubs are readying bids in the region of €60 million to test Palace's resolve in January. Wharton, for his part, is keen on a new challenge.

Whether anything will ultimately come of this remains to be seen, but Wharton will definitely be one to watch next year. If he can stay fit once he returns from his groin injury, he is likely to become one of the Premier League's most accomplished midfielders this season.
