The 34-year-old enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his Premier League career last year, netting 10 goals in the English top flight for Brighton, and he has been identified as a low-cost centre forward option by the Man Utd hierarchy.

FootballTransfers has been told that Welbeck agreed personal terms with Man Utd on Transfer Deadline Day, although there was no time for Brighton to find a replacement and a deal therefore failed to materialise.

However, we understand that a deal could take place during the January transfer window, with Brighton open to a sale due to the fact Welbeck will be out of contract next summer.

Jason Wilcox is the driving force behind Man Utd’s pursuit of the veteran striker and sources have revealed that Welbeck’s name was first brought up when the Red Devils enquired about a possible summer move for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba.

Man Utd interested in Danny Welbeck

Man Utd completed the signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko for an initial fee of €76.5 million on 9 August, although the club remain interested in Welbeck after sanctioning the departure of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli.

The 34-year-old scored 29 goals in 142 senior appearances for the Red Devils before opting to join Arsenal in 2014, winning a total of eight trophies with his boyhood club.

Following a five-year spell at Arsenal, Welbeck spent one year at Watford before being released after an injury-hit campaign at Vicarage Road. Brighton then picked him up on a free transfer in October 2020 and he has been a fantastic servant for the Seagulls.
