The report states confidently that United will move for the 23-year-old in January and see him as a long-term replacement for Harry Maguire, who could depart the club in 2026.

United are long-term fans of Branthwaite and have tried to sign him in the past, but the report says they could face competition from Liverpool and two other Premier League clubs.

Man Utd interest in Branthwaite

United tried to sign Branthwaite in the summer of 2024 but could not agree a deal with Everton, who rejected a bid of around €55m.

Branthwaite has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in English football over the past year or two.

The 23-year-old joined Everton from Carlisle in 2020 and has enjoyed a meteoric rise since then.

He spent the 2022-23 season on loan at PSV and impressed massively as they won the KNVB Cup.

Branthwaite returned to Everton for the 2023-24 season and became a key player as the club avoided relegation despite a points penalty.

He made 41 appearances and was named Everton Young Player of the Season.

Last season, Branthwaite made 32 appearances in all competitions while he has been capped once by England.
