Marc Guehi heading to Liverpool as Crystal Palace strike centre-back deal
Liverpool are on course to add Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi to Arne Slot’s ranks on Deadline Day, with the London side making an agreement that unlocks the defender.
Guehi captained Palace on Sunday as they defeated Aston Villa 3-0 in the Premier League, but he has been rumoured for weeks to be on his way to Liverpool.
With just one year remaining on his Crystal Palace contract, the 25-year-old has respected his current employers while making his desire to make the move to Anfield clear.
The Eagles had made it clear that they wanted to retain the player, but equally would not stand in his way should a suitable offer arrive. The prospect of losing him as a free agent next summer was not something they could afford.
Guehi’s dream transfer to Liverpool just drew a whole lot closer thanks to Palace finding his replacement.
Sky Sports news reports that Oliver Glasner’s side have reached an agreement with Brighton over the loan of defender Igor Julio. The deal has an option-to-buy clause in it at the end of the season.
Crystal Palace appear to have beaten West Ham to the transfer of the 27-year-old, who has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €20.5m.
Door open for Reds
Liverpool, meanwhile, are now set to have a legitimate chance of landing Guehi. The Reds have already made a bid of €40m for the England international, but Palace were unwilling to accept this while they did not have a backup.
The Reds have been chasing Guehi all summer due to the uncertainty surrounding the future of Ibrahima Konate. He has just one year left on his contract at Anfield and is being heavily courted by Real Madrid. Slot’s side are braced to lose him.
In the more immediate future, Liverpool’s need for a centre-back was increased on Sunday when Konate limped out of their Premier League win over Arsenal. With Joe Gomez set to leave for AC Milan, Slot’s options at the back could, therefore, be significantly reduced heading into the busy autumn months without Guehi arriving.
