Liverpool will sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, with an agreement finally made for the Sweden international to join the Anfield club after a protracted saga.

The Reds will break the Premier League record transfer fee to sign the 25-year-old Sweden international – something they already did earlier this summer when they signed Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for €125m.

Isak is not official, but the likes of The Athletic and Fabrizio Romano have confirmed the move will happen but for an enormous turnaround in the closing hours of the window.

The No.9 will travel to Liverpool for his medical and will sign a six-year contract.

How much will Liverpool pay for Isak?

Newcastle are set to receive €150m for Isak, The Athletic reports. This is a new Premier League figure and will take Liverpool’s total summer spend to €470m.

While this falls short of the €170m Eddie Howe's side had initially targeted for their star man, it reflects a situation that has developed over the summer, during which Isak has gone to war with the club over a transfer.

After announcing his desire to explore other opportunities in July, he refused to train with the team and even flew briefly to Spain while Newcastle were on tour.

He would subsequently release a statement condemning his employers.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading,” he said.

“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”

If the Magpies were adamant they would not sell Isak, this stance shifted following the arrival of Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart.

The saga has cast a cloud over Newcastle’s start to the season, during which they have failed to score a goal in three Premier League outings.

A summer of big spending at Anfield

Isak, meanwhile, adds another layer of quality to a formidable Liverpool forward line that has already fired the club to a perfect nine points so far this term.

After winning the Premier League title last season, Arne Slot’s side have invested heavily in the squad to ensure they can do that same this time around.

As well as splashing out on Wirtz, the Reds have also signed Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni for fees above €30m – with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi likely still to come.

The arrival of Isak, meanwhile, brings the total spend to around €470m, meaning that if Guehi also signs, they will become the first club to ever break the €500m spend barrier in one window.
