Hugo Ekitike reveals TRUE opinion about Alexander Isak's move to Liverpool
Hugo Ekitike has confirmed that he is looking forward to competing with Alexander Isak for a starting position at Liverpool this season.
The France international has enjoyed a fantastic start to life at Anfield, notching three goals in four games for the Reds following his move from Eintracht Frankfurt, however the arrival of Isak for a Premier League record transfer fee of €145 million has raised doubts over his long-term future at the club.
Isak is expected to be a guaranteed starter following his record-breaking transfer to Liverpool on Deadline Day, but Ekitike is determined to battle for his place under Arne Slot.
Furthermore, the 23-year-old has revealed his true opinion on Isak’s move while on international duty with France.
“It’s fun. When you play for the best teams, you expect to be competing with the best players,” Ekitike told French media (via Metro) when asked about Isak’s transfer.
“Isak is a player I’ve watched too, so seeing him arrive is a pleasure. It’s going to be tough competition, but I’m going to focus on performing well so that it’s a problem for the manager.”
Ekitike added: “Obviously my life has changed. It’s a big move and I’m watched a thousand times more, but I’m taking it positively, it’s really good. It’s the position I wanted to be in.
‘When you have this kind of standard, you have to show that you belong here and you have to continue to perform. But it’s a position that I like and that I want to keep.”
Could Alexander Isak play as a left winger at Liverpool?
Rumours have suggested that Isak could be deployed as a left winger at Liverpool after featuring in that role during the first few months of his time at Newcastle.
However, the Sweden international has confirmed that his best position is centre forward.
During an interview with BBC Sport in January, Isak told Alan Shearer: “Centre forward, that’s my position. I feel comfortable receiving the ball at the left side [but] I haven’t really been as good in the games I’ve started as a left winger.
“My ambition has always been to be a little bit good at everything, and I’ve certainly developed [into] the number nine type of player where I’m good in the box.”
As a result, it’s clear that Isak believes his days as a winger are over, meaning he is likely to compete directly with Ekitike for a starting berth at Anfield, unless Slot decides to change his formation in order to play two strikers at the top of the pitch.
