Chelsea wonderkid suffers Champions League HUMILIATION
Chelsea have been forced to leave out one of their recent signings from their Champions League squad just days after he expressed his delight at joining the club to play in the competition.
The Blues are among the clubs that submitted their team sheets to UEFA for the tournament, which allows up to 25 players to be registered to play in the group stage of the tournament.
Of the 25, 17 are allowed to be foreign and four spots must be filled by club-trained players or left vacant, while players who are under the age of 21 do not have to be registered if they have been with the club for more than two years.
Facundo Buonanotte joined Chelsea on loan from Brighton last week, meaning that he needed to be registered despite being under 21, but he has been left out of the squad due to the lack of space available for all of Enzo Maresca’s players.
Speaking upon his signing, Buonanotte said: “Of course, I’ll get the opportunity to play in the Champions League for the first time, which will be a great challenge. I’m really looking forward to this season and hopefully I can help the club to achieve its goals."
The 20-year-old was the main casualty from the squad and will not be allowed to play in the tournament unless he is registered in January, although that would first require an outgoing from Chelsea’s current squad.
Dowman set to break Champions League record as Premier League sides name squads
Buonanotte was not alone in suffering the embarrassment of not being registered for his new club, with Tottenham leaving out Mathys Tel despite the forward being a €35 million signing this summer from Bayern Munich.
Other notable absentees from top Premier League sides included Federico Chiesa, who saw his spot in Liverpool’s squad given to 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha.
Arsenal were also forced to leave out Gabriel Jesus from their squad, although there was a place for Max Dowman, who could become the first 15-year-old to ever play in the Champions League if he features in the coming months.
Manchester City did not include Kalvin Phillips in their squad, while Yves Bissouma joined Tel in being left out of Tottenham’s list along with long-term injury victims Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison.
