Chelsea PUNISHED for Man Utd behaviour: Blues face penalty after Old Trafford defeat
Chelsea have received a £25,000 fine from The Football Association following their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday evening.
Enzo Maresca’s side succumbed to their first loss of the Premier League season at Old Trafford, with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro guiding the Red Devils to a crucial victory after Robert Sanchez’s early red card.
The Spain goalkeeper was sent off in the fifth minute of the game after wiping out Man Utd attacker Bryan Mbeumo, and Chelsea were unable to complete a second-half comeback, despite a late header from defender Trevoh Chalobah.
The result followed Chelsea’s first defeat of the campaign in all competitions - versus Bayern Munich in the Champions League - and means they are now seven points behind English top flight leaders Liverpool after just five matches.
Furthermore, the Blues have now received a £25,000 fine from the FA, according to The Daily Mail.
Chelsea receive hefty fine from the FA
During the defeat to Man Utd, referee Peter Bankes handed out six yellow cards to Chelsea, including one to Maresca, while the aforementioned Sanchez was also sent off.
As a result, the Blues hit the six-card threshold issued by the FA and they have subsequently received a £25,000 fine.
Chelsea received similar punishments last season after surpassing the threshold versus Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. In total, they were forced to pay £150,000 due to yellow-card infringements in 2024-25.
The Blues have topped the caution charts for each of the past two campaigns and they are currently second in the Premier League so far this season - behind only Bournemouth.
Chelsea face Brighton & Hove Albion in their next English top flight fixture on Saturday afternoon and Maresca will be eager to avoid similar disciplinary issues as his side aim to get back to winning ways against the Seagulls.
