And on 51 minutes he doubled Milan's advantage in an eventual 3-0 win with a fantastic acrobatic side-volley at the back post from a Alexis Saelemaekers cross from the right.

In the process Nkunku sent an instant reminder of the qualities that Chelsea decided to dispense with this summer.

Nkunku good start at Milan

Milan signed Nkunku from Chelsea this summer for a €42m transfer fee, comprised of a fixed sum north of €35m and additional bonuses on top.

Nkunku signed a long-term contract at the San Siro until 2030.

The versatile forward became Milan's joint-second most expensive signing ever.

He has made two substitute appearances off the bench in Serie A as he builds up full fitness, but made his first start on Tuesday.

“I feel good and I’m determined to play even more,” the Frenchman said after the game.

"I’m working to feel even better.

“I feel comfortable here. I received a great welcome and everyone makes me feel good, from the staff to my teammates to the fans. I’m happy to play for Milan.”

Nkunku was put up for sale by Chelsea this summer after a second disappointing and injury-hit season at Stamford Bridge.

The player himself was also desperate to leave in order to join a club where he can be an important first-team player.

Nkunku had a difficult time at Chelsea after his €62 million move from Leipzig in the summer of 2023.

Injury issues limited him to just 14 appearances during his debut campaign (only two starts).

In the 2024-25 season, he made just nine starts in the Premier League and was considered very much a rotation player at best by manager Enzo Maresca.

Despite that, Nkunku still managed a highly respectable 15 goals in all competitions, although most of these came in the minor cups such as the Conference League and now the Club World Cup.
