Arsenal star causes transfer PANIC with lighthearted comment
Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber inadvertently set off alarm bells at Feyenoord with a well-meaning comment about twin brother Quinten Timber.
The latter is currently in the midst of massive speculation around his future, having failed to secure a transfer away while the summer window was open in Europe's top-five leagues.
While clubs in some countries can still do business, Timber looks poised to make the move to an elite European league next year. This, however, is a problem for Feyenoord because of his contract situation.
The 24-year-old's deal expires next summer, which means that he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with suitors in January. This is a doomsday scenario for the Rotterdam club as they could have collected a significant fee for the talented midfielder this summer.
Feyenoord still hold out hope that they will be able to agree a new deal with Timber, perhaps one that includes a release clause which would allow him to leave next summer for a reasonable fee.
Timber contract panic
The situation has somewhat inadvertently become quite worrying for Feyenoord due to a seemingly harmless comment made by Timber's twin brother Jurrien.
The Arsenal defender addressed his brother's future on Tuesday and said that "it's great for him to play for Feyenoord for another year." Algemeen Dagblad believes that this quote is proof that this will be Timber's final season with the club.
The report states: “If you take that quote literally, Timber will finish the season in Rotterdam and then walk out the door for free ‘after that year.’ A scenario they abhor in Rotterdam, but which is being seriously considered.
"Doing everything to still secure a multi-million-euro fee of around €12m to €15m should be the focus in these upcoming months.” This would be a bargain for a player with an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €26.3m.
