Manchester United have opted against signing a new goalkeeper despite Ruben Amorim's desire to strengthen that position.

Speculation surrounding Andre Onana's future and his standing in the Red Devils' side has been rampant following his disappointing performances last term, and his recent omission from Man Utd's clash with Arsenal has only fuelled the rumour mill.

Onana missed most of pre-season through injury, but he is now back to full fitness, and Amorim has suggested that he left him out of the squad for tactical reasons.

Despite the coach's comments, sources close to Man Utd and Onana insist that the goalkeeper's omission was purely down to his physical condition. Whatever the case, it is no secret that Amorim remains unconvinced by the Cameroon international.

Indeed, according to journalist Gaston Edul, Amorim has explicitly requested that a more reliable shot-stopper be recruited, only to be defied by his Man Utd higher-ups.

Man Utd's half-hearted Martinez attempt

The reporter claims that Amorim is desperate to add Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to his side, but that Man Utd's hierarchy is reluctant to sanction a move, only making a half-hearted loan offer to placate the coach.

“The deal was very close," Edul said of Martinez while speaking to 412. “The coaching staff, especially Amorim, wanted him, and Martinez knew that Amorim wanted him. Amorim could not convince the United board that it was important to spend on a good goalkeeper.

“Well, they told him that Onana was there and said, ‘OK, we’ll do you a favour and try,’ and they offered a loan. Aston Villa made it clear under what conditions they would let him go for a sale.”

Martinez remains on the books at Aston Villa despite what appeared to be an emotional goodbye to Villa Park after the final home game of last season. He missed the opening fixture of the current Premier League season due to a red card he received against Man Utd.
