Kobbie Mainoo transfer battle ON after Amorim hint
Marseille have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo on loan for the duration of the 2025-26 campaign.
The 20-year-old has expressed his desire to leave Old Trafford before the end of Transfer Deadline Day on 1 September and Marseille are eager to finalise a deal to bring him to the south of France.
That is according to transfer reporter Graeme Bailey, who claims that Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi has a “real interest” in Mainoo as he searches for a possible replacement for France international Adrien Rabiot.
It comes after Ruben Amorim dropped a major transfer hint during his pre-match press conference ahead of Man Utd’s clash against Burnley on Saturday.
When asked about Mainoo’s future, the Red Devils boss told reporters: “Until it is official, I can't say much. I want Kobbie to stay, he needs to fight for his place, and we need Kobbie. That is not going to change.”
Mainoo has just two years remaining on his current Man Utd contract, although the Red Devils will reportedly hold fresh talks over a new long-term deal if he opts to remain at the club this summer.
Kobbie Mainoo to leave Man Utd?
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Mainoo has asked to leave Man Utd on loan this summer, after failing to feature in either of their opening two Premier League fixtures of the season, while The Mirror even report that he wants to complete a permanent transfer to Napoli.
Mainoo is eager to prioritise game time ahead of the 2026 World Cup and his determination to leave Man Utd comes after he was excluded from England’s squad to face Andorra and Serbia during the September international break.
Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson earned his first senior call-up after starring during England’s triumph at the U21 European Championship this summer, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has earned a recall after a stellar string of performances under Oliver Glasner.
