Baleba has emerged as United’s top target to strengthen in midfield after a standout campaign for the Seagulls, with the two Premier League sides having been enagaged in dialogue this week.

And, according to Cameroonian outlet CFOOT, Baleba is ‘expected to sign’ for United ‘in the coming hours’ for €112 million, which would eclipse the €105m spent on Paul Pogba in 2016 as the club’s biggest ever transfer.

Baleba is already believed to have confirmed his desire to join United, indicating that personal terms are unlikely to be a problem.

If confirmed, the transfer would be the second-biggest signing of the summer window of any club behind Liverpool’s €125m capture of Florian Wirtz.

The deal would also take United’s spending to nearly €350m despite having yet to sell a player on a permanent deal after the big-money acquisitions of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

Man Utd continue spending for top Amorim target in midfield

United had been desperate to strengthen in midfield but they had initially suggested they were not able to afford another huge transfer without first making sales.

However, the club approached Brighton over a move for Baleba earlier this month, suggesting that they felt they could meet the hefty demands for the 21-year-old.

FootballTransfers understands that United have explored moves for other midfielders such as Quentin Timber in case they could not seal a deal for Baleba.

But it appears Ruben Amorim may have got his preferred target, although sources in England have yet to confirm the reports from Cameroon, which may indicate more to be done on the deal.

Just hours before the revelation, Fabrizio Romano claimed a ‘club to club’ resolution was ‘far’, with Brighton reluctant to sell their star man who still has three years remaining on his contract as well as an option for a further season.
