Phil Foden handed update on Man City future as Guardiola makes HUGE transfer decision
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has made a huge transfer decision that could have major ramifications on Phil Foden’s future at the club.
The England international has endured a difficult 12 months at the Etihad Stadium and Man City’s business in the transfer market this summer has threatened to diminish his role at his boyhood club.
Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki have arrived to bolster Guardiola’s options in midfield, and they both scored during Man City’s 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in their opening fixture of the new Premier League season.
Foden, meanwhile, missed the game due to an ankle injury, although he returned to the matchday squad versus Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, making a 15-minute cameo during Man City’s 2-0 defeat.
In addition to Reijnders and Cherki, the England star also has competition from Bernardo Silva and Omar Marmoush in an attacking midfield role at the Etihad Stadium, but his chances of regular minutes are set to be boosted following news that veteran Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly set to leave the club.
Ilkay Gundogan wanted by Bayer Leverkusen
Gundogan rejoined Man City on a free transfer from Barcelona last summer and he made 54 appearances across all competitions during the 2024-25 campaign, scoring five goals and providing eight assists.
The ex-Germany international has one year remaining on his current contract with Guardiola’s side, however he is now expected to leave Man City before Transfer Deadline Day closes on 1 September.
That is according to Nicolo Schira, who posted on X: “Bayer Leverkusen have asked [for] information for Ilkay Gundogan, who is not in Pep Guardiola’s plans and will leave Manchester City in the next [few] days.”
The Bundesliga outfit have already finalised a deal with Man City so far this summer, signing Claudio Echeverri on loan, and they are now eager to add Gundogan to their squad after losing Granit Xhaka to Sunderland.
