Chelsea legend Joe Cole has urged his former club to sign a new goalkeeper before Transfer Deadline Day, despite Robert Sanchez’s form at the Club World Cup.

Sanchez, 27, enjoyed a fantastic tournament in the USA and he won the Golden Glove award after a sensational performance during Chelsea’s 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

The Spaniard’s form at the Club World Cup has led to renewed optimism from Chelsea fans regarding the goalkeeper situation at Stamford Bridge, but Cole has told Enzo Maresca to sign a new shot-stopper before the summer transfer window slams shut on 1 September.

“They [Chelsea] kept chopping and changing last season,” Cole told TNT Sports (via Metro). “Look at all the great teams who have won titles, they’ve all got a top, top goalkeeper. For me it’s just logical that we need to sort that out.”

Chelsea lodged several offers for AC Milan superstar Mike Maignan back in June, but Sanchez’s recent form has ended their pursuit of a new goalkeeper and it appears as though Maresca will retain faith with the 27-year-old this term.

Joe Cole heaps praise on Joao Pedro

Although Cole believes Chelsea must sign a new goalkeeper this summer, the former Blues midfielder is delighted by the impact Joao Pedro has had since his arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion.

“He basically came off the beach and started banging the goals in at the Club World Cup,” Cole said. “He looks like he’s been a Chelsea player for years. I know the people at Chelsea were really, really pleased with the summer transfer window.

“Joao Pedro can play in any of the front-three positions and they probably don’t actually know how good a player they’ve got right now. I think there’s another level for him to go up.”

Pedro has scored five goals in five appearances since joining Chelsea from Brighton in June, and he could make his Premier League debut for the club versus Crystal Palace on Sunday.
