EXCLUSIVE: Man Utd identify Quinten Timber as Carlos Baleba alternative
Manchester United are closely monitoring Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber as a possible alternative to Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba, FootballTransfers understands.
Ruben Amorim is eager to sign a new central midfielder before the end of the summer transfer window and we have been informed that Timber has been earmarked as a potential target by the Red Devils.
The Netherlands international has just one year remaining on his current contract at Feyenoord and the Eredivisie outfit face the possibility of selling him at a reduced price this summer in order to avoid losing him on a Bosman deal in 2026.
Man Utd view Timber as a cheaper alternative to the aforementioned Baleba, whose price tag has become a major sticking point over the past week.
We have been told that Amorim favours a move for the Brighton midfielder, but the Old Trafford hierarchy are concerned that a deal could lead to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) issues heading into the 2025-26 campaign.
Baleba has been tipped to command a transfer fee of at least €116.2 million (£100m) and several figures at Man Utd believe that Timber may actually be a better tactical fit than the Cameroon international.
Quinten Timber to join Man Utd?
Feyenoord boss Robin van Persie has admitted that he wants to keep Timber at the club on a number of occasions over the past few months, however he recently stripped the 24-year-old of the captain’s armband, with summer signing Sem Steijn taking over.
Although Man Utd are yet to submit a formal offer for the Dutchman, FootballTransfers understands that Feyenoord may be willing to sanction a sale this summer if they receive a suitable bid before Transfer Deadline Day.
Timber, who is the twin brother of Arsenal star Jurrien, has made a total of 104 first-team appearances for Feyenoord since arriving at the club from FC Utrecht for a fee of €7.4m in 2022.
