Toby Collyer has left Manchester United on a permanent basis after joining Championship side West Bromwich Albion on a four-year deal.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell understands the Red Devils will receive a guaranteed €3.5m (£3m) with add-ons potentially taking the figure to €8.8m (£7.6m).

Most of the add-ons are believed to be achievable, though some relate to West Brom reaching the Premier League and Europe, and Collyer representing England.

While United have also included a 40 per cent sell-on clause and a buy-back option in the deal, the initial fee has left many supporters scratching their heads.

Hull City and Middlesbrough are also believed to have made offers for the 22-year-old but he has chosen West Brom as the best place to further his development.

Collyer has become the fourth player to be sold by United this summer, following earlier deals concluded for Rasmus Hojlund, Radek Vitek and Tyler Fredricson.

The midfielder joined United’s academy in March 2022 and made his competitive debut against rivals Manchester City in the 2024 Community Shield.

He leaves Old Trafford having made 13 appearances in total, with his Premier League debut coming against Liverpool in September 2024.

Collyer said there were “a few reasons” why he wanted to rejoin the Baggies, having spent five months on loan at the Hawthorns last season, making 12 appearances.

“The size of the club is one of them,” Collyer told West Brom’s official website. “I also really enjoyed my time here on loan in the first half of last season.

“Another reason was the manager, James Morrison. He was really keen to have me back and that’s all you want in football – a manager who wants you and wants to see you do well.

“As I say, I really enjoyed every second of my loan spell here last season even though I didn’t reach the levels that I wanted to reach.”

Collyer helped Hull City win promotion to the Premier League

Collyer had his loan spell at West Brom cut short by United on New Year’s Day, before he joined Hull for the remainder of the 2025-26 season.

He made five appearances for the Tigers as they secured promotion to the Premier League by beating Middlesbrough in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

“That’s another reason why I wanted to come back here, to show everyone what I’m about and prove to everyone how much of a great player I am,” Collyer added.

“I ended up following most of the Albion games in the second part of last season, to be honest. I remember coming back with Hull and getting the runaround.

“Being out on loan makes you grow up. Even though I didn’t have the best loan spells last season, I felt like I grew up and became much more of a man.

“I felt as though now was the right time to move on and really kick on with my career and I’m glad that I’ll get the chance to do that here.”
