The Cameroon international enjoyed an eye-catching 2024-25 campaign under Fabian Hurzeler and he is now widely considered to be one of the best young midfielders in European football.

Man Utd have been monitoring his situation for several weeks and Baleba is open to the possibility of joining the Red Devils this summer, as per multiple reports. In fact, there are some suggestions that he has already agreed personal terms with Amorim’s side.

Man Utd will, however, be forced to make Baleba the most expensive African footballer of all time, while they will be required to break their own transfer record if they want to acquire his signature.

Rumours have stated that Brighton will demand at least €116.2 million (£100m) to sanction a sale this summer, but The Independent claim that Baleba’s asking price instead stands at a whopping €139.4m (£120m).

The Man Utd hierarchy are reportedly working on the structure of an opening bid, with the club eager to offer an initial fee of €92.9m (£80m), plus further payments via add-on clauses. The possibility of including Jadon Sancho in the deal has also been floated as an idea, although it’s unlikely that Brighton would accept such a proposal.

Man Utd’s Carlos Baleba alternatives

According to The Independent, Man Utd have identified Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace), Morten Hjulmand (Sporting CP) and Ederson (Atalanta) as three alternative targets to Baleba if they are unable to finalise a deal with Brighton.

However, The Transfers Podcast understands that Man Utd have been priced out of a move for Hjulmand, while Wharton and Ederson are also likely to command huge transfer fees.
