Liverpool may have taken an unlikely step closer to securing the signing of Alexander Isak following Newcastle United’s latest piece of transfer business.

Arne Slot’s side have been chasing a deal for the Sweden international for several weeks, but they are yet to reach an agreement with Newcastle, despite the fact that Isak has handed in a transfer request.

Liverpool’s opening offer of €127.8 million (£110m) was immediately rejected by the Magpies, and reports speculate they have returned with a second bid worth roughly €145m.

Isak has been exiled from first-team training by Eddie Howe and he has even moved out of his home in Newcastle, as per reports, as he looks to force through a move to Anfield before the summer transfer window shuts on 1 September.

Newcastle’s asking price varies across sources, however it’s expected that Isak will almost certainly usurp Florian Wirtz (€125m) as the most expensive player in Premier League history if Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of his signature.

Fabrizio Romano says ‘here we go’ to Newcastle transfer

Newcastle have failed to sign the vast majority of their transfer targets so far this summer, with the exception of Anthony Elanga, but they have now reached a full agreement to sign Aston Villa attacking midfielder Jacob Ramsey.

That is according to Fabrizio Romano, who posted on X: “EXCLUSIVE: Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle, here we go! Agreement for £40m fee from Aston Villa.

“Ramsey agreed on personal terms and travels for medical at Newcastle right now. Ramsey strongly wanted Newcastle and deal now done.”

Although Ramsey isn’t a centre forward, he is an attacking player and he has frequently played as a left winger at Aston Villa. His arrival could therefore signal that Newcastle are preparing for Isak’s possible departure, with Anthony Gordon potentially set to be deployed as a number nine during the early weeks of the season.

Furthermore, Newcastle are also closing in on a deal for Brentford striker Yoane Wissa. The 28-year-old wants to complete a move to St James’ Park and Keith Andrews has confirmed that he will not feature versus Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

During his pre-match press conference, Andrews told reporters: “It's been a very disrupted pre-season. As a head coach, I want him in the building, I want him to be a part of the first-team squad, but he is not in that space.”

With Newcastle set to sign Ramsey and a move for Wissa looking on the cards, their stance over Isak may relax, which could encourage Liverpool to ramp up negotiations and finalise a deal.
