SHOCK twist leaves Mbeumo transfer on the rocks for Man Utd
Manchester United’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo could be thrust into further doubt after another intervention by Tottenham, with Thomas Frank keen on bringing one of his Brentford favourites to his new club.
United have pursued a deal for Mbeumo for the last month but they have yet to agree a fee with Brentford, having seen multiple offers in excess of €70 million rejected.
Mbeumo is also wanted by Tottenham but the Cameroonian has expressed his desire to move to United despite the appointment of Frank in North London, having left Brentford to replace Ange Postecoglou as the club’s manager earlier this summer.
With Mbeumo seemingly off the table for Tottenham, Frank has switched his attention to the forward’s partner in crime in attack, with the BBC reporting that an approach for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa could be made.
Wissa struck up an impressive partnership with Mbeumo last season, scoring 19 Premier League goals, however the 28-year-old is entering the final year of his contract with the Bees.
Having seen the duo score nearly two thirds of their goals last season, Brentford would be reluctant to cash in on both players in the same window and they may be more open to cashing in on Wissa due to his contractual situation, potentially leaving United without their top transfer target in the process.
Brentford may opt for Wissa sale over Mbeumo
Mbeumo is also in the final year of his contract but, crucially, Brentford have an option to extend the 25-year-old’s deal for another season, meaning that they are not in danger of losing their top scorer on a free transfer compared to Wissa.
Brentford would ideally like to keep both players but they are aware that may not be possible, especially if their asking prices are met, with Wissa likely to cost significantly less than the €82m they would demand for Mbeumo.
Newcastle have also considered a move for Wissa but neither they nor Spurs have made contact with Brentford over a deal and they are merely exploring the finances of a transfer.
United will now be forced to act quick and come to a resolution over Mbeumo’s fee in order to avoid missing out on a key transfer for Ruben Amorim this summer.
