Real Madrid advantage secured between Arsenal and Liverpool with Rodrygo transfer 'expected'
Liverpool are ‘expected’ to enter the race to sign Rodrygo and Arne Slot’s side could have the crucial edge to beat Arsenal to the Real Madrid winger’s signature this summer.
The Reds are keen to continue strengthening their squad despite already spending more than €200 million on players during the window, including the British transfer record signing of Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool’s attention is now believed to be on a striker, having initiated contact with Newcastle for Alexander Isak in another deal that could end up breaking the transfer record, with the Magpies not willing to consider offers below £120m (€139m.)
Such a move would all but exhaust Liverpool’s resources but they may be forced to consider another big move if Luis Diaz forces his way out of the club this summer.
Diaz is being pursued by Bayern Munich and Barcelona and the German side saw an offer of €67.5m rejected by Liverpool despite the winger telling the club he wishes to leave.
Should Diaz eventually get his way, Liverpool will be forced to replace him and Footmercato reporter Santi Aouna has claimed that Rodrygo could be among Slot’s top targets in any situation, potentially paving the way for an intriguing swap deal with Real Madrid.
Liverpool could use Konate in Rodrygo talks to avoid Real Madrid déjà vu
Another issue on Liverpool’s mind has been the future of Ibrahima Konate, with the French international having rejected his side’s efforts to renew his contract, with is set to expire next summer.
In a sense of déjà vu, Konate is believed to be following in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s footsteps by holding out for a free transfer to Real, potentially leaving Liverpool missing out on another big fee for a crucial first teamer.
With Liverpool slowly resigning themselves to Konate’s fate, the Reds could look to use Konate as a bargaining chip in any deal for Rodrygo, knowing the defender would help lower Real’s asking price and also ensure value is earned from his inevitable departure.
Reports in Spain have claimed that Liverpool would want €50m for Konate this summer, while Real are only willing to spend €25m, but a compromise could be reached to get both clubs their targets and maximise the Premier League side’s spending power.
