OFFICIAL: Chelsea net €29m as Petrovic completes Bournemouth transfer
Chelsea have taken a further step towards clearing their logjam of goalkeepers and shrinking their squad size after Dorde Petrovic completed his permanent transfer to Bournemouth.
Petrovic was one of a number of Chelsea players who was not involved at the Club World Cup in order to resolve his future, having been told that he was not a part of Enzo Maresca’s plans next season.
The 25-year-old spent the most recent campaign on loan at Strasbourg where he impressed enough to be named the Ligue 1 side’s player of the season as well as being nominated for the league’s best goalkeeper award.
However, with Chelsea beginning the summer with as many as eight senior goalkeepers on their books, Maresca’s side have been working to move a number of them on, with Petrovic being the latest to leave Stamford Bridge.
The Serbian international has signed for Bournemouth for a fee of £25 million (€29m) and has penned a five-year deal at the club, replacing Chelsea loanee Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has since joined Arsenal for €6m.
The deal nets Chelsea a significant profit on a player whom they signed for €16m in 2023 and takes the club’s sales revenue to over €50m this summer, having already spent more than €240m on signings.
Chelsea turn attention to sales as squad trimming takes shape
Chelsea will continue to focus on outgoings in the coming weeks, with a number of players in their ‘bomb squad’ still in transfer limbo after being left out of the first-team training set up and also yet to find a new team.
The likes of Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell and Axel Disasi all have no futures at Stamford Bridge and will ideally be moved on before the end of the summer, although there is optimism players such as Joao Felix and Armando Broja will be sold soon.
Chelsea have also now lowered the number of senior goalkeepers on their books to four, with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen set to continue their battle for the number one jersey ahead of American youngster Gabriel Slonina, who is likely to be the third choice after Marcus Bettinelli joined Manchester City this summer.
Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders is expected to be loaned to Strasbourg to replace Petrovic, having signed for Chelsea last summer for €20m before returning to former club Genk for the year.
