Arsenal are set to present a formal offer for Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres after a fresh meeting with his agent on Wednesday afternoon, according to various Portuguese outlets.

The Gunners are accelerating their pursuit of a new No.9 after failing to bring in anyone in the short and hectic Club World Cup transfer window. Due to not competing in the tournament in the US, Arsenal did not have to navigate tight registration deadlines to get their business done.

This has allowed them to take their time and do their homework on their two top targets, Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, since the end of the season. As FootballTransfers has reported, Arsenal have held talks with both in recent times.

The North London club are carefully weighing the pros and cons of these two very different personalities and profiles. We understand that Sesko is the favoured option due to his age and more modest expectations of his role in the team.

However, Gyokeres remains a viable Plan B should no agreement be reached with RB Leipzig for Sesko, and Arsenal are now seemingly trying to put a deal in place for the Swede before making a definitive decision on which striker to sign.

Arsenal to make Gyokeres bid

According to CNN Portugal and confirmed by Record, Gyokeres' agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, met with Arsenal's hierarchy on Wednesday afternoon for a fresh round of talks.

It is claimed that this dialogue was much more formal than previous discussions, and both outlets take this as a clear sign that Arsenal will make an official offer for Gyokeres imminently.

Cetinkaya is said to have stepped up his efforts to secure a move for his client after the recent falling out with Sporting, which resulted in club president Frederico Varandas going public on Wednesday and insisting that he won't be 'blackmailed.'

Sporting dispute that there is a 'gentleman's agreement' to let Gyokeres leave for around €70 million this summer, and they are now demanding more but without insisting that his €100m clause is paid.

Arsenal are described as the club who are the closest to making the first move for Gyokeres, but it is also confirmed that Man Utd are closely watching developments. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have been in contact with the player's camp on a daily basis.

However, Arsenal are Gyokeres' first choice, and the 27-year-old is understood to have made this very clear to his agent.
