Contract talks open as offers pour in
Athletic are doing their best to retain Nico, but with the attacker out of contract in 2028, the La Liga side knows that if they are to do this, they need to tie him down to a new deal.
As such, AS reports they have been in talks with their star player for several weeks in order to get an agreement with their ace. In particular, Athletic’s idea is to increase Nico’s wages but also to raise his €58 million release clause, which is making him so attractive a prospect to major clubs.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are three of the teams credited with an interest in the player.
Deal already agreed?
On Tuesday, reports broke that Nico has already agreed to a move to Bayern.
Sky Germany claimed that he is willing to move to the Allianz Arena, where the top target remains PSG attacker Bradley Barcola. The Frenchman, however, is not thought to be a feasible target, so they have lined up the Spaniard as a Plan B.
Talks have even been held with the 22-year-old, who has given his OK to Bayern, who see the deal as great value for money.
Barcelona ready to re-enter race
Barcelona had dropped their interest in Nico Williams, according to reports in Spain, yet Jota Jordi has claimed on El Chiringuito that the player can still be considered a “dark horse” option for the Catalans.
Initially, he would not name Williams as he said: “I’m talking about a player who, until today, we all thought was impossible to ever have any links with Barca’s entourage again. And after this call, I think he’ll be heard again. Certain things have to happen…
“If Nico Williams were to make a move to Barca, he’d become number one again.”
These claims were rejected by Athletic Club correspondent Nico Rodriguez, who said: “About what Jota said, I’m very calm. I’m less so with the interest from clubs like Bayern Munich or others in the Premier League.
“I’d be surprised if he moved to Barcelona. In Bilbao, we don’t accept disrespect.”
