Liverpool eye FORGOTTEN Nunez replacement as 'moneyball' alternative to Ekitke transfer

Liverpool could switch their attention to one of Darwin Nunez’s former strike partners to replace the Uruguayan at Anfield this summer in Arne Slot’s search for a new number nine.
The Reds are planning a summer of major investment after their Premier League title win, with talks already under way to sign Florian Wirtz in a deal that could cost more than €120 million.
A striker is also among the top priorities for Liverpool, with Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko among the club’s leading targets, however their price tags could reach as high as €100m.
With Liverpool also hoping to strengthen in defence this summer, the club could consider a more ‘moneyball’ approach by targeting cheaper options for below their market price, leading to interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Goncalo Ramos.
Anfield Watch sources understand that, while Ramos is ‘by no means’ top of Liverpool’s wishlist, he is seen as a ‘value-for-money’ option after making just 12 Ligue 1 starts this season.
PSG would likely seek to recoup the €65m they spent on Ramos in 2023, with the Portuguese international still a productive squad player despite his lack of starts under Luis Enrique.
However, Ramos is said to want first team football, while PSG are hoping to add an attacker who suits their squad better, indicating that an agreement is feasible if Liverpool did formalise their interest.
Ramos pursuit could depend on Darwin future at Liverpool
Ramos is a player well-known to Liverpool’s recruitment team, having been considered as an option by director Julian Ward before the club instead opted to sign his Benfica teammate Nunez in 2022.

Benfica had used Ramos as a support option for Nunez, with the 23-year-old only scoring seven goals in 17 league starts that year, but it was after his teammate moved to Liverpool that his career flourished as he scored 19 times in 30 matches the following season.
Jurgen Klopp’s ‘love’ for Nunez is ultimately what swayed Liverpool’s opinion but the 25-year-old is available for transfer this summer, having started just eight Premier League games under Slot last season.
There is interest from Saudi Arabia in Nunez and his departure would free up funds for Liverpool to invest in their preferred target of Ekitike or Sesko, with Ramos likely to be considered an alternative option further into the summer, with the deal for Wirtz the highest priority for Liverpool.
