Barrios was touted as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez in west London, although the Argentina international is now expected to remain at Chelsea, despite rumoured interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid.

Furthermore, with Romeo Lavia back to full fitness, Dario Essugo arriving from Sporting CP this summer and Andrey Santos set to return from a loan spell at Strasbourg in July, Chelsea are well stocked in central midfield.

As a result, their interest in Barrios has diminished slightly in recent weeks, and they have now been informed that a summer move is extremely unlikely.

In fact, Barrios has agreed to sign a new contract with Atletico Madrid that will run until 2030, according to Matteo Moretto, with the deal now “finalised.”

The 21-year-old’s existing contract was due to expire in 2028, but he has reportedly reached an agreement to extend his stay in the Spanish capital by an additional two years.

Chelsea’s summer transfer plans

Although Chelsea are set to miss out on Barrios, they are expected to be fairly active during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The club are aiming to sign a central defender, a right-footed left winger and a centre forward this summer, with Marc Guehi, Dean Huijsen, Nico Williams, Jamie Gittens, Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko among their targets for those three positions.

Meanwhile, Axel Disasi, Joao Felix, Christopher Nkunku, Carney Chukwuemeka and Ben Chilwell are all expected to be sold before the 2025-26 campaign begins.
