Donny van de Beek will leave Manchester United in the January transfer window, Fabrizio Romano reports.

The midfielder has not been in the plans of the Premier League giants for some time and appeared to be leaving last summer, but ultimately decided against a move to Ligue 1 side Lorient.

“I'm sure he will leave next winter,” says the transfer market expert in conversation with the YouTube channel The United Stand.

According to Romano, Van de Beek’s decision is being driven by the prospect of missing out on Euro 2024 if he remains peripheral to Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd team.

He explained: “He would like to play again. It's actually a shame, because Donny wanted to play for Manchester United. But he never plays, and he knows he needs to play regularly after his injury. So he can't sit on the couch, especially not for long periods of time. That's not good for him.”

Van de Beek turned down transfers

Van de Beek had several options to leave Manchester United last summer, but a deal did not get off the ground, according to Romano.

“Last summer was not easy. Donny wanted to go to Real Sociedad, and Manchester United also wanted to participate in a transfer. But as we know, United made a number of financial demands that Real Sociedad could not meet,” the football transfer news expert explained.

After the transfer to Real Sociedad failed, Van de Beek was given the option to leave for Galatasaray. However, the 26-year-old midfielder decided not to do so.

“United hoped he wanted that, but Donny decided not to do it,” Romano stated.

Donny van de Beek's transfer value over time

Nevertheless, Van de Beek wants to leave Manchester United at all costs in the coming transfer period.

“He's a really good player,” Romano said. “But he has to keep playing. Playing 10 minutes in two months is not enough. So he leaves.”

Signed from Ajax in September 2020 for €39 million, Van de Beek has featured only 62 times for Man Utd and has played only 21 minutes for the Red Devils this season across all competitions.
