With the summer transfer window long since closed, clubs have already began prep work for the upcoming January transfer window.

With players on expiring contracts also able to negotiate Bosman transfers with European sides from January, there is much to look forward to in the winter market.

Chelsea led the way with their business in the summer, spending in excess of £250 million to break the world record for the largest outlay in a single transfer window.

Despite Premier League clubs spending nearly £2 billion on players in the summer - almost as much as the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A and La Liga combined - the January window could still be extremely busy.

The January transfer window will follow the Qatar World Cup and teams will undoubtedly have international performers on their mind, meaning some high-performing stars could be rewarded big transfers.

There is also the likely prospect of accounting for injuries, with Liverpool and Arsenal potentially in the market for a midfielder after already losing key players through long-term absences.

And then there are unhappy players - like Cristiano Ronaldo - who are desperate to find a new club in the new year.

European sides can also start negotiating with players who will be free agents in the summer of 2023, with some big names able to agree moves from January.

Premier League clubs, however, cannot approach other English players until the final month of their deals, meaning some players such as Youri Tielemans and Marcus Rashford could be snapped up by teams in Europe.
