'UTTER DISGRACE' - Arsenal fans SLAMMED for Noni Madueke abuse
Rio Ferdinand has slammed Arsenal fans for the level of vitriol directed at imminent signing Noni Madueke.
Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Chelsea winger Madueke for a fee of €58 million plus add-ons, with the England international accepting a five-year contract at the Emirates until 2030.
It is widely reported, including by Fabrizio Romano, that the transfer is all done and will officially be completed in the coming days.
News of Madueke's imminent move has not gone down well with Arsenal fans, who believe that the Gunners should be aiming for better players than Madueke.
Rio Ferdinand slams Arsenal fans
There have been many angry and insulting comments directed towards Madueke and the club on social media, while Arsenal fans made a petition on change.org called ‘#NOTOMADUEKE’, which picked up more than 3,000 signatures in one day.
The petition reads: “Arsenal fans deserve better, we are so close to success and, instead of capitalising on the squad we have, it seems we are moving two steps back, just like the three previous transfer windows.
“We can surely do better than Madueke and [Viktor] Gyokeres. Show some ambition [and] repay the fans the same way we’ve backed the club for the past two decades.”
The behaviour of Arsenal fans has been slammed by England legend Rio Ferdinand.
"For a young 23 year old English footballer to be vilified, bullied, embarrassed and totally stripped down at a time when you’re meant to be celebrating a transfer worth £55 million. Yes a young kid with a dream about to secure a £55 million dream move to a club of his desire leaving a rival at that to be treated in this manner via section of the Arsenal fan base is an utter disgrace," Ferdinand posted on social media.
"Just put yourself in his shoes for one minute just put yourself in his parents shoes for one minute and just think of how that feeling must be. I’ll say it again, at a time as a player as a human as a family you should be celebrating. I just hope the people that are closest to him are around him and supporting him in the way that he needs right now.
"It’s fine for fans to disagree with signings or decisions made at their football club but the way some fans have publicly voiced their opinions and those who have gone a step further in publicly joining a petition for this player not to be signed by their football club is beyond me. I have never seen anything like this before, and I hope I don’t ever again. Like I said earlier just imagine this was your best friend, one of your family members, your brother, son…then tell me how would you feel if they were on the receiving end of this vulgar behaviour ???
"By the way, This isn’t aimed at all Arsenal fans it’s just a small section who have become very loud unfortunately. I just hope the transfer goes through and Noni Madueke rams all of this negativity back down the throats of these impostors. Whatever happens from here good luck Noni."
Madueke was available for transfer at Chelsea after the club spent heavily on wingers Joao Pedro from Brighton and Jamiue Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.
The Gunners are in the market for reinforcements for both flanks. On the left, they want an upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli, while they are also seeking a backup to Bukayo Saka on the right.
Madueke, who is most comfortable on the right but can also play on the left, would initially come in to deputise for and compete with Saka.
Madueke came through the youth academies of Crystal Palace and Tottenham before moving to PSV where he made his name.
He scored 20 goals in 80 games for PSV before moving to Chelsea in 2023 for €33 million.
He has made 91 appearances and scored 20 goals, while he has been capped 13 times by England.
