Football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has given updates on the biggest stories in the game, including Liverpool’s move for Alexander Isak and a huge update at Arsenal.

Darwin Nunez to Napoli is over

Romano has confirmed that Liverpool will not sell Darwin Nunez to Napoli, with the Serie A champions opting for another option.

“The story is officially over: Darwin Nunez and Napoli. Napoli have agreed a deal with Udinese for Italian striker Lorenzo Lucca. They will pay €35m plus add-ons for a loan with an obligation to buy. They’ve called Liverpool to inform them that their negotiation for Nunez has collapsed,” Romano said.

“Darwin Nunez is not going to Napoli. He remains one of the players expected to leave Liverpool in the January transfer window. In January, February, they made this decision internally.

“Now let’s see what happens with Saudi clubs. I’m told there’s strong interest in Darwin. We’ll return to the table. More clubs can join the race.”

Isak transfer latest

Although one door for Darwin is closed, the Reds are still making moves for a blockbuster move for Newcastle’s Alexander Isak. If Arne Slot’s side get this over the line, it would be the second time in the summer they have broken their transfer record.

Romano says: “Liverpool are fully focused on getting a striker. Their interest in Alexander Isak has been confirmed. I can confirm all that information.

“Liverpool have approached Newcastle and there is club-to-club contact. The two clubs are talking. That’s a big step. They’re aware of Newcastle’s stance, repeated throughout the summer transfer window and before, which is that they don’t want to sell the player. Isak is the face of the project.

“Now they’re presented their idea and proposal to Newcastle. Liverpool have told Newcastle that they’re ready to offer £120m [€138m] for Isak. It’s a record fee.

“I’m told the player has not closed the door to Liverpool. He’s still in talks with Newcastle over a new contract, but he didn’t stop Liverpool. It’s in Newcastle’s hands. The bid is ready, and it all depends on what Newcastle tell Liverpool in the next hours or days – it can’t be too long.”

“For Liverpool, it’s Isak is Newcastle open the door. If not, it will be Hugo Ekitike of Eintracht Frankfurt – who is the player wanted by Newcastle. They had a bid of €80m rejected on Monday.

“Liverpool are on both stories. Let’s see what happens with this domino.”

Truth over Sesko rumours revealed

Romano also addressed claims that Benjamin Sesko could be about to make a surprise move after Arsenal’s interest in him cooled.

“One of the rumours going around social media is that Benjamin Sesko is maybe going to the Saudi Pro League with a crazy bid. These bids have been on the table since the start of June. Some Saudi clubs at the end of May presented crazy salary proposals to Sesko,” Romano said.

“But the answer was the same: Sesko has a lot of respect for Saudi but at the same time he wants to continue his career in Europe. He’s not in advanced negotiations.”

Gyokeres to Arsenal latest

Talks between Arsenal and Sporting continue over a deal for striker Viktor Gyokeres. All that remains to be discussed are the structure of the bonus payments. A package of €10m bonuses has been agreed, yet exactly what this entails is still being negotiated, according to Romano.

“Remain connected on the Viktor Gyokeres story because the talks continue in London between Arsenal and Sporting CP. They’re trying to find an agreement on the add-ons structure,” Romano says.

“At the moment, Arsenal want to pay €3m in easy add-ons with €7m more difficult. Sporting want all of the €10m to be very easy. So the conversation continues. Arsenal are still working on the Gyokeres deal to get it done as soon as possible.”

Arsenal deal done

Romano has confirmed one imminent deal at Arsenal: Ethan Nwaneri will sign his new contract with the club.

“I told you at the weekend that Arsenal were making progress on his contract talks. Now they want to complete the agreement with Nwaneri this week. I can tell you that it’s almost done,” Romano says.

“Ethan Nwaneri is set to sign a new deal at Arsenal. It’s an important deal for the Gunners. There were clubs in the Bundesliga who were very aggressively trying to sign Nwaneri, strong interest from Chelsea, so many discussions took place. But the player has shown his love for Arsenal. Now the contract is set to be signed soon.”
