Fabrizio Romano has issued an important update on the Manchester United squad, confirming that a player described as “huge” by Rio Ferdinand will remain at Old Trafford after agreeing terms.

United have made a comparatively slow start in the transfer window. Matheus Cunha has been signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers, yet the Old Trafford side have made little concrete progress in adding any further new faces to their squad.

Romano cannot bring news of a new face for Ruben Amorim’s squad, but rather it’s one of the old guard who will be remaining at Old Trafford for another 12 months.

He reports via X: “Tom Heaton’s new deal at Manchester United has been agreed and sealed, done deal. It will be valid until June 2026.”

Tom Heaton: An underestimated presence at Man Utd

While Heaton’s new contract will not make a big impact on the starting XI, where the future of first-string goalkeeper Andre Onana remains in doubt amid new rumours linking him to Monaco, the 39-year-old is a big figure in the dressing room.

Rio Ferdinand, a Man Utd legend, has spoken of the former England keeper in glowing terms.

“Tom Heaton is going to be a Scott Carson. In terms of value in the changing room, Pep Guardiola said: ‘Scott Carson is huge for them,'” Ferdinand told his Vibe With Five podcast back in November.

“Tom Heaton would probably fall into that category. He must be.”

Heaton joined Man Utd from Aston Villa on a free transfer in July 2021 but has barely featured for the first team since arriving at Old Trafford for what is his second spell at the club having come through the academy.

He failed to make the breakthrough after initially coming into Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team squad in 2006/07. He has played only three times since returning to the club, with his last outing coming in a 2023 EFL Cup semi-final second-leg clash against Nottingham Forest.
