Manchester United are closing in on their second major transfer of the summer.

Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha has already been signed by the Old Trafford club, yet a widespread reset of Ruben Amorim’s squad is expected to take place.

While the Red Devils have seen several of their Premier League rivals, notably Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City, all act quickly in the market to get several deals done, they have been rather slower off the mark.

But all this could be about to change imminently as reports from Argentina indicate that they are making progress on signing Emi Martinez from Aston Villa.

Uriel Lugt reports on X: “Manchester United are advancing in talks for Emiliano Martinez. The goalkeeper is willing to join the Red Devils and negotiations with Aston Villa are expected to begin in the next few days.”

Martinez may be a world champion with Argentina, but indifferent performances at club level have seen Unai Emery’s side willing to offload him. In part, this has been driven by the club’s poor position with regards the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Villa are expected to open the bidding for the 32-year-old at €35 million, which stands well above the player’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €16.6m. Martinez, though, has been worth more than €40m in the past and still has four years to run on his contract at Villa Park. This puts the Birmingham club in a strong position for the ex-Arsenal man.

Nevertheless., Villa have reportedly picked Lille's Lucas Chevalier - rated as the best young goalkeeper in the world - as Martinez's replacement

Man Utd transfer update

Man Utd are also seeking to add more attacking options to Amorim’s squad for the new season, but while they are advancing on a deal to sign Martinez, they have been frustrated in their search further up the field.

Talks with Brentford have brought little joy in their negotiations to sign Bryan Mbeumo, who now looks likelier to go to Tottenham Hotspur, while United have been told that Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres would prefer a move to Arsenal.

GMS reports that Man Utd have also asked about Bayern midfielder Joao Palhinha after being priced out of Atalanta star Ederson.
