Rangers are expected to back new boss Danny Rohl in the transfer market next month and the centre forward position has been identified as a key area in need of improvement.

The Scottish giants spent €11.6 million on Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski over the summer, however they have only scored a combined seven goals in 41 matches for the Gers this term.

Right-back James Tavernier is the club’s top goalscorer in the Scottish Premiership so far this season, with just four goals, and the Ibrox outfit have been tipped to dip into the market in order to land a new striker next month.

It remains to be seen how much the club are willing to spend on a new centre forward given the summer investment in Chermiti and Miovski, although a solution is required if they want to mount a title charge during the second half of the 2025-26 campaign.

Below, FootballTransfers runs through three strikers Rangers should target in January.

Joe Gelhardt (Hull)

Joe Gelhardt has been in red-hot form since joining Hull City on loan from Leeds United and he has already notched 10 goals and provided three assists in 20 games so far this season.

Reports suggest that Leeds have no intention of recalling the 23-year-old in January, but they could be tempted to activate this clause if Rangers express their interest in a permanent deal.

Leeds may have plans to eventually integrate Gelhardt back into their first-team squad, however he has just 18 months remaining on his current deal at Elland Road and an exit could be on the cards next year.

Gonzalo Garcia (Real Madrid)

Rangers are unlikely to sign Gonzalo Garcia on a permanent deal from Real Madrid in January, but a loan agreement could potentially be agreed if they enter the race for his signature.

The Spaniard scored four goals in six games at this summer’s Club World Cup, however Kylian Mbappe’s return to fitness has restricted him to just three starts across all competitions in 2025-26.

As a result, he has been heavily linked with a loan move in January, with the likes of Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion and Leeds all eyeing a possible deal.

Troy Parrott (AZ Alkmaar)

Troy Parrott has enjoyed a sensational start to the 2025-26 season for both club and country, and his development is being closely watched by a number of clubs.

The 23-year-old has already netted 16 goals and provided three assists in 22 matches for AZ Alkmaar this term, while he also scored five goals in two games for the Republic of Ireland in November to send them to the World Cup play-offs.

Celtic are among the clubs linked with a January move for the former Tottenham Hotspur striker, but Rangers would be wise to target an ambitious mid-season deal.
