Damning Amorim verdict as real reason behind Hojlund's renaissance revealed
Manchester United forward Rasmus Hojlund is thriving on loan at Napoli.
The Denmark international was forced out of Old Trafford in the summer after Man Utd decided to invest big money in Benjamin Sesko. However, while the Slovenian youngster has struggled, his predecessor has enjoyed a career renaissance.
Hojlund joined Napoli and immediately hit the ground running. He scored just 14 minutes into his debut and his since added eight more goals after notching a brace against Cremonese at the weekend. He has also scored five times in five games for Denmark since leaving Man Utd.
The 22-year-old is all but guaranteed to join Napoli permanently next summer. His loan deal includes a purchase obligation that will be triggered when the reigning Serie A champions qualify for the Champions League.
Hojlund's goals in the absence of Romelu Lukaku have kept Napoli in the title race. The win over Cremonese kept Antonio Conte's side firmly in the mix for the Scudetto. Napoli are two points off league leaders Inter.
Conte the reason behind Hojlund revival
According to Luca Nigriello of Hojlund's agency Sport Entertainment Group, Conte has been a huge factor in the striker's revival. The Italian has instilled "confidence" in the 22-year-old in a way Ruben Amorim was seemingly unable to do at Man Utd.
“When we were closing the operation with Napoli, there was great enthusiasm," he told TuttoNapoli. "Rasmus arrived from a complicated period at Man Utd, but he never viewed Napoli as a stopgap.
"He arrived with true hunger, with the desire to get back into the game. Character-wise, he is strong, tough. He knows what he wants. He is learning new things. He has always been a striker of depth, as seen at Atalanta.
"Now, he is adding movements that are more typical of a penalty area poacher, more like a central reference point, almost like Lukaku. Recent goals are different from his classic repertoire: if he also adds this opportunism, he becomes truly complete.
“Conte gives him confidence and is making him grow. Rasmus plays, makes mistakes, and learns. He has become hungrier, more consistent. He is a chameleon who adapts to what the team asks.”
