McKenna opens up over 'really big' Celtic manager job talks
Kieran McKenna has insisted he has had ‘no conversations’ with Celtic over becoming their new manager despite the Ipswich Town boss’ alleged affinity towards the Scottish giants.
Celtic are searching for a new manager after the shock resignation of Brendan Rodgers earlier this week, which revealed strong tensions between the club and their former manager.
McKenna has emerged as one of the bookies’ favourites for the job alongside Ange Postecoglou, who has been strongly linked with a return to the club he successfully managed between 2021 and 2023.
However, with Postecoglou reportedly ready to take a break from football after his brief stint with Nottingham Forest, speculation over McKenna intensified but the 39-year-old brushed off doubts over his future.
"I have not had any of those conversations," McKenna said when asked of Celtic’s interest. "It's not something I have given any thought to, or where any part of my concentration is this week.
"I have a special job here at a special club. And we're at a really important stage of the season. Anything outside of that hasn't touched my radar."
McKenna acts as though 'I'll be at Ipswich forever'
McKenna was born in London but is a former Northern Irish youth international who is believed to have grown up supporting Celtic, although he refused to confirm his allegiances.
"Growing up, we all have our affinities," McKenna said. "I don't think everyone has to go around and announce what they were, but of course it's a really big football club."
McKenna has impressed during his time with Ipswich, leading them back-to-back promotions to the Premier League in his first two years before their relegation to the Championship last season.
The Tractor Boys boss had interviewed for the Chelsea job last summer before the appointment of Enzo Maresca and he subsequently signed a new four-year contract with Ipswich, reportedly containing a release clause worth more than €5 million.
"In every manager's contract, there are things," McKenna said in response to questions over the clause. "I don't know what mine are and, if I did, I wouldn't tell you anyway!
"I approach this job like I'll be Ipswich manager forever. I know that's not always going to be the case, but I'll always do my best as long as I am here."
